Who Am I?
DANCER . CHOREOGRAPHER . CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Joy-Marie Thompson is a freelance dance artist from Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from SUNY Purchase with a BFA in Dance Performance; awarded with the 2018 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and the Bert Terbough Award for Dance. She has professionally performed the choreography of Doug Varone, Rena Butler, Ohad Naharin, Shamel Pitts, Sidra Bell, Staycee Pearl, and Maxine Doyle. Thompson is the founder and co-curator of issadancelook (2018), an Instagram/blog that archives the clothing styles of dancers from around the world. Thompson also exhibited Interpretations (2016); a photo series made in collaboration with dance photographer, Rachel Neville, where she re-imagines famous photos of black dancers. As a choreographer, she has debuted work at Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, American Dance Guild, and Derida Dance Center. Her film, TONGUE TIED SHREWS, co-directed and performed with Sherah Shipman, was featured in several festivals worldwide and screened at Lincoln Center. Thompson was most recently a performer in SLEEP NO MORE (NYC). Thompson's latest dance film LINKt, in collaboration with Sherah Shipman, will premiere in 2020.
