joy and the white girls (work in progress)
Created during the Derida Dance Center/ Movement Research- GPS Residency in July 2019.
The dancers and I asked the question: what does it mean to be a woman?
Then for me, wanting to tell of my experience of being one of the few black women in the area (the gawking, cat-calls, and staring from residents in Sofia, Bulgaria) I added myself to the piece.
So, the piece asks and hopefully interrogates the question: what does it mean to be an alienated person (in this case, a black woman) in a group of white women who are also trying to find their identity under gender roles?
Watch the following video in the highest quality, please! Full video of piece upon request. (16 minutes).
